Have you ever spent time thinking about your life and asked yourself questions about where you’ve been and  where you’re going? If you’re  a believer, have you wondered,  am I in this life for me or for Christ? Or what does living out a day-to-day Christian life look like? Over the next few day’s we’ll be looking at Christ’s call for believers to live out a life faithful to Him. Christ himself calls us to follow him in certain ways so that first and foremost, God may be glorified.

Mat 5:16  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Read ~ Mat 20:20 – 28 (ESV)

Mat 20:20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. Mat 20:21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” Mat 20:22 Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” Mat 20:23 He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
Mat 20:24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. Mat 20:25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
Mat 20:26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, Mat 20:27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,
Mat 20:28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Questions:
I What do you think was at the heart of James and Johns request of Jesus?

II What response do you think Jesus is looking for from his disciples?

III What did Jesus say His purpose was ?

IV Do you think that Jesus would ask for the same response from you today?
If so take a minute and write down what are you going to do about it.

Commentary:
~ Regarding Pride – Matt 20:20-28
Matthew Henry said of James and Johns request,”There was pride at the bottom of it, a proud conceit of their own merit, a proud contempt of their brethren, and a proud desire of honour and preferment; pride is a sin that most easily besets us, and which it is hard to get clear of. It is a holy ambition to strive to excel others in grace and holiness; but it is a sinful ambition to covet to exceed others in pomp and grandeur.”
