Today we will continue in delving deeper into Christ’s words to us in John 15. As you read be thinking about how yesterday and today’s reading plays out in your day to day living out your faith and trust in Christ.

Power of the Word
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The Piercing Blade
In John 15:8 Christ says by bearing much fruit you glorify God and in so doing prove to be my disciples. If an outsider had full access to your life’s record as though it were a video series, would it consistently show proof of whom you’re a slave, disciple and friend? Does your life point to Christ?

Read: ~ John 15:9-18

1. How do we abide in Christ’s love?
2. Notice the term “friend” in these verses. If you ponder them for a moment, how do they make you feel ? Do they confirm anything for you? If so what?

At this years Shepherd’s conference I got the chance to learn something from a sermon by John MacArthur that I would like to share with you. In John 15:15 there are two Greek words I would like you to understand. They are kurios and doulos. (please note the definitions on the right). The words Jesus uses, Master(kurios) and servant(doulos), in Jn 15:15 are slave(slavery trade) talk. He used them to clearly define the type of relationship we have with him. He is the master and we are the slaves. Slavery was prevalent in their culture. It was all around them.

Κύριος -(from Strong’s)
kurios
koo’-ree-os
From κῦρος kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, that is, (as noun) controller; by implication Mr. (as a respectful title): – God, Lord, master, Sir.

δοῦλος -(from Strong’s)
doulos
doo’-los
From G1210; a slave (literally or figuratively, involuntarily or voluntarily; frequently therefore in a qualified sense of subjection or subserviency): – bond (-man), servant.

Picture in your mind a slave market. Picture yourself filthy, in torn rags for clothes and bound in chains in this slave market. Someone walks up to you, lifts your chin to look at your face. You find yourself looking into the face of Jesus. He studies your face and then smiles as if He knows you. He turns to the slave master and says “This one is mine. I’ve already paid the price.” He takes you home, He cleans you up, feeds you, serves you…His slave. And He calls you… friend.

3. Based on the description above how does John 15:15 impact you? Are you obedient to your master? Do you feel He would call you friend? If not what needs to happen to change that.

Prayer Points:
VBS
Construction
Abiding in Christ
Bearing Fruit
Worship Christ

I have no friend or loved one who has paid such a price to demonstrate their love for me as our Lord has in His finished work on the cross, beaten and humiliated for His desire of an eternal relationship with…me.
